Making Bat Ray Lenses |
Lead | ||
|
I was thinking about trying to make my own Bat Ray lenses out of Micro liquid glass. I was going to take the original lens and press it in some modelers clay
to get the right size, then pour the liquid glass in there. Will this work?

I've never used the product called Micro Liquid Glass, I know there is a bar-top epoxy called Liquid Glass, is that what you're referring to? Epoxies
can be rough on clay molds. But technically - it could work (once you remove the little round thing that shouldn't be there) I'd recommend some silicon
based mold release in the clay.

Here is a link to what I was going to use http://lighthousehobbies....alogDetails.aspx?id=18498 . Once I make the imprint I was going to
smooth out the impression. What is up with that round thing on the lens anyway? Now you mentioned "silicon based mold release" is this what I should
ask for at the hobby shop?

It will not.The Krystal Clear will not give you the part you want.You need something that is clear and hard when done.PMB will be making Batray lense.or you
could take the Mattel piece and work with that.alexander
I use
Hobbysilicones.com and Aztex airbrushes

Try this | #4 | ||

Take your lens and press it into the clay. I prefer super sculpey. Then spring for a five dollar bottle (smaller if you can get it) bottle of future floor
finish, and a hobby knife. I would use the knife to scribe very light lines in the clay where the lines appear on the lense. You can re-do it as often as you
need to be satisfied both sides look good. Then just pour in the future. It will dry clear and hard as well as thin. Next float a little glass stain ink the
color you chose (amber or yellow) and let that dry. another coat of future to seal the deal and walla!. The drawback to the future is that it needs overnight
to dry. So it takes a couple days but it's easy as pie. Hope this helps.

Thanx a lot for the tip.I know PMB has a lot a parts on the horizon however, the timeliness of PMB getting the orders out is a little frustrating. NO SLAM ON
PMB, I know you guys are busy, just trying to get my BM done before Tikicon. Us newbies get so excited to pimp and then get frustrated waiting on parts.
Speaking for myself, this is my first and only project and I don't have anything else to deflect my excitement. So while I am waiting on my PE and decal
kit, I am trying to make lenses so I can finish installing the lights. I appreciate all of you guys imparting your knowledge, thanx to all!

Trust me, I completely agree with the frustration at the "timeliness" of our releases. I have too much going on to rush production on these things
and I've been let down by every major moldmaker/caster I've worked with this year.
I will say that had we released them when I had many original parts ready in the Summer as I had planned - we'd all be bummed out about having to buy new parts again now because collaborations with other artists have increased the quality and variety of the set that we will are now going to get. I am trying to get them ready to show and order by TikiCon. -S |

By the way, if you're going to go to the trouble to try to cast your own batray lenses, while Future or Crystal Clear may work for you - if you're
buying stuff anyway, just go to Michael's and buy some of their 2-part clear resin. It will work just as well (or not) as any of the products mentioned
(probably better) and if you put some mold release into the kleen klay, you should get better results.

You're right on Scooter! | #9 | ||

Almost any craft store carries Castin Craft. It is billed as a clear epoxy resin, although it WILL yellow with age. Fortunately on a pair of amber lenses that
won't really be an issue will it?

Scooter, do you plan to sell upgrade parts individually as well, or just as one big set? Take it or leave it? Personally I only plan to upgrade a few parts and
it would put me off ordering a set if it had too much stuff I wouldn't use on my elite. The bat ray lenses would be essential though!

I'll take that as a 'no' then. I guess many of us will want different parts and have odd bits to trade, and trading threads will appear here. Less
admin for PMB than offering parts individually. Only problem for me is the weight on my conscience of posting little tiny bits of plastic halfway across the
globe and back, and the associated carbon emissions...

RightHandDrive wrote:It's less about admin. so much as it is about creating an economy of scale and value. I could go into Home Depot and just buy the single torque wrench I need for $22.00 or I could buy a set of them for $32.95. I'm probably going to buy the set figuring that at some point, I just might need some other wrenches. With the photoetch set - it was more obvious why we couldn't split up the set for sale, but similar types of production/sale issues are present in the parts sets as well. We're still working it out. There may yet be an opportunity to purchase parts separately. I guarantee they won't be as affordable that way though. |
