Door Handles.
As pointed out elsewhere and earlier, the Elite "photo-etched" door handles are etched onto foil decals, not steel, like our set parts. I was wondering if I wanted to go with the flat ones from our set or these white metal cast parts seen here that have a bit more depth to them. I opted to stick with Andy's from our set because they really have the right shape and size. Here's the doors with the HW foil decal peeled off. Note the presence of holes from the standard door handle plugs. Yeah, foil stickers. It's an upgrade! As I've said before though, HW really made some fortunate mistakes in the favor of customizers. Case in point: I will use one of these holes to give more depth to the handles. As they are seen on-screen in the show - the circular lock part has been removed leaving a deep hole showing.
From top - down - here are the HW decal, the white metal handle, and our P.E. handle with the lock hole drilled through from the top to give it an inward dimpled push.
overhead view of same 3 options. As you can see, under scrutiny - Andy's is the clear choice.
Here it is installed on the car.
Now for some realism. I've been aging up some of my parts and I've been liking the effects thus far. Remember the Futura was a 10 year old car when Barris got it. It stands to reason that some of the parts that he kept where a little worn looking. And door handles would have gotten some use. Andy's parts have an etched groove so I flowed in some black wash to bring out the lines and add some wear. The nice thing is that the hole in our part lines up with the one in the Elite door, so it goes through realistically.
