Just found this board. Fantastic work.. I'm hoping to start my own hot wheels 1/18. Which model do you think is a good start off point. I'm thinking the elite model, not too expensive. Any help appreciated and sorry if this has been covered.

Hi All

Hello, and welcome to the board Harry | #1 | ||

I would have to agree with you that the Elite is the best starting point. Alot of guys prefer the standard edition for two main reasons: One- it's
relatively cheap, and Two- the cost of the replacement parts.
To really do the car justice the entire greenhouse/cockpit needs replacing as well as many of the small parts around the body. I personally feel the Elite is the best starting point due to the fact it has a higher parts count. In many cases this helps with disassembly and replacement as theres less need to grind things away. However, if you aren't counting pennies and plan a full on re-construct, go with the standard. What the heck, save a few pennies to put toward those parts right? The preceeding has been the opinions of the author and not necessarily the opinions of this network, it's affilliates or sponsors.

I think I will go with the Elite. I like how it comes apart and I'll probably just do a small amount of work on it..Thanks!

Personally, I like working with the Elite due to how easy it is to remove the incorrect Hot Wheels parts. The Super Elite has absolutely nothing that I want to
keep and the Standard has to be cut up for modifications.

Thanks Scott. Have my Elite winging it's way to me! I'm going to be ordering some parts from your site. Should i wait, are you going to be updating
with some new parts soon? Especially thinking of Standard D-Scope, bat phone and roll bar. Or would I be better off ordering what i can now, to be going on
with.
Cheers!! |

@harry
Usually I would say to buy whatever is available now because if you wait - something may get sold out, never to return. But right now - I would hold off a few weeks because we are slowly defining our "Fall Catalog" and deciding on (and posting) a few more parts up every week. i am thinking we will have all the newest offerings up within the next 4 weeks. Sep 1 was my goal and we'll see how close we get to that. :) |

I wanted to augment my earlier response. I know we're all a bunch of penny-pinchers these days. Half of us aren't working etc. BUT for years (and I
mean like 20 years) this car in modeling form has been way out of reach and expensive to acquire in any really good quality version:
What I am trying to say is that lately we've adopted a bit of a "flea market mentality" here and I think to some degree - that's good. It brings more people to the hobby than before. I also think it's necessary (see above comment about economy and employment) BUT - let's take a reality check here for a second - we should be thanking our lucky stars. If you'd have told me or any other Batmobile modeler 5 years ago that we'd have a laser scanned excellently built 1:18 diecast Batmobile for $29.99 sitting on the shelves at Toys R Us, I'd have laughed and told you to keep dreaming the beautiful dream. And it IS a beautiful dream we're living in. The work that's being done right now by Doug and Alexander and Kevin and Leonard and Mit etc. is phenomenal. And it is leaps and bounds beyond the stuff we were doing for 1/25 scale models 10 years ago. I know the supporters of Autoart and Burago etc. will fight this but there is NO WAY that Hot Wheels could afford to do the type, quantity and/or quality of the upgrades that we are doing to this car. Not with what they paid for the license and put into the initial scanning and tooling up. No way. So we now have no end of $29 models to BURN through and make some mistakes on, saving the Elite models for our "good" work later. I'm not advocating waste, but seriously, I can buy 4 standards for what one 1990 crappy resin batmobile model used to go for. This is a loooong way around to the point that - Yes, the elite is the nicest one to finish up BUT - buy at least one standard to hack apart and see how things go together, how the paint is applied, how the screws go etc. You'll be glad you did. Nobody gets this stuff right on the first go. (well, maybe Doug but he's a machine) :) -S |

Thanks Scott! I'll hold off as long as I can..:-). Can't wait to see whats next. In the past I restored Corgi Batmobiles but recently found this site
by accident. It rekindled my love of the Batmobile so I'm inching to start my Elite custom!

Hey! Are saying I'm some sort of "tool"?

Yes FoB... | #11 | ||

...just like me, you are some sort of tool, and like me, maybe not the sharpest tool in the shed, but a tool nonetheless.
Fortunately for us...we are very usefull tools . In fact if you think
about it...we are tools that, well...tool. We tool the items mattell should have tooled when they tooled the tooling for the Batmobile tools.
No real signifigance here, i'm just in a great mood and wanted to see how many times I could fit the word tool on one page. At any rate, I just put a polish on the canopy tool (YES, inside AND out this time) and poured the top half of the mold. I just discovered that my air conditioning has a built in dehumidifier yay! So now I can control the
weather in my home and moisture will no longer be a casting crap shoot. I just finished a very nice pair of door panel tools for the Batmobile. That's
right, I said finished! YaY again! . And last but not least, my new
dashtop tool is close enough that i've started thinking about how to do the mold (wich I guess would be the actual tool?). Wanna see some pictures? Well
no . Just kidding, my sister has my camera again and i'll have
pictures in a couple days.
P.S. FoB, what do you use to clean a camera lense? seriously i don't know. "A little nonsense now and then, is relished by the wisest men" |

Futura,
I can't wait too look at your new stuff. Or too look at those finished canopies. I'm glad you found your dehumidifier, and your castings should toolerate the weather much better now. I need to get to bed before it gets too late. Chow! PS "FoB, what do you use to clean a camera lense?". Usually, 800 grit will clean about anything off of it. BTW, how many times did I put "tool" in my response?
